Vancouver has slid to 61st place from 59th in Euromonitor International’s ranking of the world’s top tourist destinations.
The report, released this morning, ranks tourist arrivals for 2010. It reveals Vancouver had 1,951,000 tourist arrivals in 2010. Although that is higher than the 2009 figure of 1,928,700, it is a decrease when compared with the other cities contending for top spot.
The 2010 report ranked Toronto in 37th place with 2,879,000 tourist arrivals, up from 40th in 2009, when the city saw 2,634,800 tourist arrivals.
The list ranks Hong Kong as 2010’s top destination in the world, with nearly 20 million tourists. The city climbed up from 10th position in 2009, when London, England, topped the list.
This year’s report also found that Asian destinations topped the world’s tourist destinations.
“It’s no surprise that five of the 10 leading city destinations on the list are in Asia-Pacific,” said Caroline Bremner, head of travel and tourism research at Euromonitor, in a press release.
“The booming economy of cities like Hong Kong, increased investment in luxury travel and tourist attractions in cities like Singapore, and rising disposable incomes and improved government policies in countries like Vietnam are all key contributors to the region’s popularity as a tourist destination.”
