John Furlong has been named an officer to the Order of Canada, Governor General Michaelle Jean announced Wednesday.
The Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) CEO is being recognized for his role in making the Olympic Games a reality “which galvanized Canadians from coast to coast.”
Prior to his role with VANOC, Furlong was president and COO of the Vancouver 2010 bid where he became it’s international spokesman.
The Order of Canada is considered the centerpiece of the nation’s honour system and the officer ranking recognizes a lifetime of achievement in service to the country.
The announcement was part of 74 new appointments to the order, which included Burnaby actor Michael J. Fox, Victoria politician and conservationist David A. Anderson and Vancouver educator Ross Paul.
A ceremony date has yet to be announced.
