Veterinarians join ranks of self-regulating professions in B.C.

A new self-regulating college for the veterinary profession in B.C. was announced by the province Thursday.

The new legislation, which received royal assent in the legislature yesterday, renames the British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association as the College of Veterinarians of B.C.

The government said in a release that the legislation will enable:

B.C. Veterinary Medical Association president Ray Snopek said in the release that the public will benefit from a more efficient complaint process and clear disclosure of disciplinary outcomes. “We eagerly anticipate greater public involvement in our professional regulation.”

The government did not provide a timeline, but the new legislation will take effect after a regulation is made to bring it into force.
