The province has earmarked $25 million for 15 separate clean energy projects in B.C.
About half of the projects receiving funding from the Innovative Clean Energy Fund involve biomass. The University of Northern B.C. received $3.5 million for a $12.9 million gasification project that uses mountain pine beetle-sourced wood.
Other biomass projects include Alterna Energy's bio-carbon production plant in Prince George, which will convert wood residues into thermal energy and bio-carbon, and Metro Vancouver's project to create electricity from wastewater sludge produced from the Lulu Island wastewater treatment plant.
Lignol Innovations and Nexterra Energy Corp. also received funding for their biomass projects.
UBC will receive $2 million for a $6.4 million solar canopy illumination system that's aimed at reducing lighting requirements and energy costs.
