The result contrasted with a $103.8 million profit in the same quarter a year ago and came despite quarterly sales rising to $948.1 million from $887.9 million.

West Fraser cited an increase in quarterly expenses and product costs to $728.8 million from $609.6 million as a key reason for the negative result.
