White Spot Ltd. has invested more than $100,000 in a restaurant on wheels – a 30-foot catering truck equipped with all the amenities that its fast-food Triple O’s locations have.

Triple O’s director of operations Scott Lewis said the vehicle, dubbed Triple O’s On The Go, will be driven to empty lots around Metro Vancouver and used to test the viability of new areas for new Triple O’s locations.

It will also be used as a test kitchen to gauge reaction for new menu items such as a pulled pork poutine or a barbecue bacon burger.

“This is our first truck,” Lewis said, while sitting on a picnic table temporarily set up at an empty lot that White Spot owns at the corner of Cambie Street and 12th Avenue. “We don’t know if we’ll have more than one. There’s only so much research we need to conduct at one time.”

He then gestured to the vehicle parked next to the picnic table.

“We’ll also use this truck to support charitable initiatives such as barbecues for the Zajac Ranch for Children, KidSport Canada, the Variety Club or for different cancer support groups.”

White Spot has 65 full restaurants but has recently been focusing more on expanding its Triple O’s concept. Two years ago there were 50 Triple O’s locations. By the end of August there will be 60 Triple O’s restaurants, including new locations at:

  • Langara College;
  • University of British Columbia; and
  • British Columbia Institute of Technology.
