Fresh from hosting 2,600 meeting industry professionals this past weekend, the Vancouver Convention Centre will welcome 5,500 statisticians July 31 to August 5.

The Meeting Planners International’s 2010 World Educational Congress is an important conference given that attendees recommend conference destinations to clients. It ends July 27.

The statisticians’ 2010 joint statistical meetings will be the world’s largest gathering of number crunchers this year, but will not be the convention centre’s largest meeting. The 2010 Pacific Dental Conference attracted 12,000 delegates to the city post-Olympics.

“That conference is huge,” said Jinny Wu, the convention centre’s communications manager, of the statisticians' meeting. “The convention will involve them using space in both the east and west buildings.”

The eastern convention centre building is undergoing a seven-month, $21 million renovation to replace its iconic white sails, which were installed when the building was constructed in 1984.

“Two of our exhibit halls will be under construction and not open any more because of construction on the roof but it’s business as usual with all the other space,” Wu said. "Fortunately, we’ve been working closely with our client since Canada Place finalized their plans for the roof replacement.”
