Yukon-Nevada in hot water south of the border

The American Mine Safety and Health Administration (MHSA) has put Vancouver-based Yukon-Nevada Gold Corp.’s Jerrit Canyon Mill in Nevada on a federal safety watch-list for alleged violations.

The company's gold production property was cited for a potential pattern of violations in existence at the mill. Mine operators can be subject to closure orders for violations.

Yukon-Nevada (TSX:YNG) noted in a release that, in most cases, the closures would affect areas of the mine that are not critical to production or would be corrected within a very short time.

President and CEO of Yukon-Nevada, Robert Baldock, said, “Although we disagree with MSHA’s assessment, we intend to work with MSHA to reach a full and efficient resolution of this matter. Yukon-Nevada is committed to the safety of its workforce and will take all measures to ensure the continued safe and productive operations at Jerritt Canyon.”

This is not the first time the property has run into trouble. In 2008, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection handed Yukon-Nevada stop orders due to environmental concerns.

At press time, Yukon-Nevada’s stock was down 15% on the day at $0.305 a share.
