YWCA announces Women of Distinction nominees

Fifty-nine Vancouver women have been honoured with nominations for the YWCA Vancouver Women of Distinction Awards.

Fifty-nine Vancouver women have been honoured with nominations for the YWCA Vancouver Women of Distinction Awards.

The awards honour women whose achievements contribute to the well-being and future of the community, along with businesses and organizations that support the wellness and diverse needs of their employees.

Among the categories recognized are art, culture and design; health and active living; and community building.

Seven women from the Vancouver business community were nominated in the category of business and the professions. They include:

  • Laura Ballance, president, Laura Ballance Media Group;
  • Christine Day, CEO, Lululemon Athletica Inc.;
  • Connie Fenyo, president, Dye and Durham Corporation;
  • Kathy McGarrigle, COO, Coast Capital Savings Credit Union;
  • Jane Russell, senior vice-president, business banking, TD Bank Group;
  • Nancy Shewfelt, senior vice-president, investment advisor and wealth management consultant, Wellington West Capital Inc. and the Shewfelt McMillan Group; and
  • Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO, Vancity Credit Union.

Nominees were chosen based on being notable in their field for professional leadership and consistent commitment to excellence.

The ability of nominees to leverage their achievements and business acumen to facilitate change and create opportunities was also considered.

Winners will be announced on May 31.
