Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz is leading a trade mission in Korea the week of April 14 with the goal of strengthening ties with Asia.

The mission delegates are 30 agriculture-related companies and associations, which include stakeholders from sectors such as meat, grains, processed foods and horticulture. The groups will meet with Korean agriculture associations and representatives to promote cooperation with Canada.

This trade mission comes a month after a free trade agreement was signed between Canada and the republic of Korea. The agreement eliminated almost 87% of tariffs for Canadian goods being imported to Korea.

“The Canada-Korea free trade agreement holds tremendous potential for Canada’s agricultural exporters,” Ritz said.

“With negotiations now complete, this mission will help build important industry-to-industry agricultural trade ties needed to gain a competitive edge in the lucrative Korean market.”

Canada exports an average of $691 million worth of agrifood and seafood to Korea, making Canada Korea’s 12th-largest supplier of these products.
