Canadian travellers’ top destinations are still in Europe and the United States, but Asian vacations are becoming increasingly popular, said Hotels.com in a new report.

The travel site ranked the top 20 cities chosen by Canadians when booking their vacations, and three cities that saw some of the most growth between 2014 and 2015 were Bangkok, Tokyo and Hong Kong, jumping up 12, five and two spots, respectively.

"Historically, Asian countries have offered great value for accommodation, making them popular among travellers looking to explore a unique, new culture," said Hotels.com travel expert Taylor Cole.

"With Canada's strong Asian economic ties, naturally business travel remains strong too, especially with the Canadian government's support of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) business travel card."

Travel to Rome has also grown over the past year, with the number of bookings bringing that city up four spots in the list.

The number one tourist destination remained New York, followed by Las Vegas, London and Paris.

Within Canada, the most popular destinations were Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton.

While Vancouver was in third place overall, other British Columbia destinations “didn’t fare as well in 2015, with Victoria, Kelowna and Whistler dropping in popularity, perhaps due to mass wildfires that plagued much of the summer months,” Hotels.com said in a press release.
