The Australian government is blocking attempts by Chinese buyers to acquire the country’s largest cattle ranch, which happens to border the famed Woomera weapons testing range. The Kidman family ranch is 101,000 square kilometres and comprises about 1.3% of Australia’s entire land mass and 2.6% of the country’s agricultural land. After months of secret bidding the contest came down to two Chinese companies, Genius Link Group and Shanghai Pengxin Group. Last week Australian Treasury Minister Scott Morrison said the size and location of the property meant that selling it to a foreign buyer is “contrary to the national interest.”
