Australia’s new conservative Liberal Party government of Prime Minister Tony Abbott has stridden into a raging debate about the effects of mining and coal seam gas extraction on rivers and waterways.
Despite strong opposition, federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has approved the Kevin’s Corner coal mining project in Queensland.
The project will be one of the largest coal mining operations in the world and is led by India’s GVK Group. The plans have been protested by several Australian environmental groups.
