The Bangladesh government is prepared to subsidize the installation of renewable energy sources in order to lessen the country’s dependency on expensive, imported fossil fuels.
The minister for energy and power, Nasrul Hamid, said the government will have to make a decision to provide subsidies in order to cover the losses incurred by businesses that switch to renewable sources. As of the end of March, Bangladesh had installed 2.8 million solar home electricity systems, but only 2% of the 6,500 megawatts of power generated daily countrywide comes from renewable systems.
