Bangladesh has won a landmark judgment from the United Nations Permanent Court of Arbitration in a territorial dispute with neighbouring India. The dispute was over the line marking each country’s 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone in the Bay of Bengal. The tribunal, based in the Hague, awarded Bangladesh 19,467 square kilometers out of the 25,602 square kilometers in dispute.
The judgment is final and paves the way for economic development in this part of the Bay of Bengal that had been stalled while the dispute was active.
