The garment industry in Burma, also known as Myanmar, is booming, and corporate leaders expect the sector to employ one million people within the next few years. The Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association said in a recent report its members’ factories employ about 250,000 workers. But domestic and foreign interest is growing in the industry since the end of military rule and the lifting of sanctions in 2012. Workers are paid the equivalent of about $100 a month for a 50-hour working week, on average. The main markets are Japan (48%), South Korea (33%) and the European Union (14%).
