Burma: Power failure threatens growth

Burma’s role as Southeast Asia’s hottest undeveloped economy is being threatened by its lack of electrical power.

From March to the end of May last year, factories in the commercial centre, Rangoon, had as little as three hours of electricity a day and suffered a two-week power blackout.

The Rangoon electricity board has asked local and international companies to build more generation plants, and they have suggested using Burma’s abundant natural gas as fuel. But there is not enough natural gas available because of export commitments to China and Thailand.
