Cambodia’s minister of mines and energy, Suy Sem, says hundreds of threatened species of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish will have to be relocated when the Stung Cheay Areng hydroelectric dam is built. The highly contentious project in Cambodia’s remote Areng Valley is due to be built by Chinese engineering giant Sinohydro Group at a cost of $320 million and is expected to generate up to 108 megawatts of electricity. But opponents say the dam will displace thousands of people and wreck the habitat of several animal species, including the endangered Siamese crocodile.
