Most tourists visiting Cambodia want to see the ancient temple at Angkor Wat and nothing else. Thus, of the 2.8 million visitors to Camodia this year up to August, 766,000 arrived at Angkor’s airport at Siem Reap, while only 541,500 landed at Phnom Penh.
Siem Reap airport, however, is not up to the task, and plans are underway for a South Korean Camco Airport Co. Ltd. to build a $1 billion replacement able to handle up to 15 million passengers a year. But the project is well behind schedule, not least because in March last year the CEO, Lee Tae-hwan, was sentenced to seven years in prison for involvement in raising fraudulent loans.
