China’s Foreign Ministry is reporting that it is making headway with Washington on an agreement for dealing with corrupt Chinese officials who have sought sanctuary in the United States. Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said last week the two sides have “reached important consensus” at the 12th meeting of the China-U.S. Joint Liaison Group on Law Enforcement Co-operation. The U.S. and China have no extradition treaty, but a U.S. official involved in negotiations said the two sides had “agreed to develop a strategy” to deal with the fugitives.
