A study of the salaries of civil servants for the Chinese government has found they are well below those of people with similar qualifications in other jobs.
The survey found the average salary for civil servants is just over $7,000 a year, and in some cases has not risen since 2006. The study points out that civil servants used to get substantial perks, such as housing subsidies, but these have been cut since the ruling Communist Party started a campaign against excessive spending in 2012. Reports of the study in official media draw no parallels between low pay for civil servants and high levels of corruption.
