There has been a strange contest over whether China or India has the capital with the worst air pollution.
Beijing appeared undisputed champion as the most polluted major city on earth until a recent article in the New York Times under the headline “Beijing’s Bad Air Would Be Step Up for Smoggy Delhi.”
Air quality researchers at Yale and Columbia universities quickly jumped on this story, however.
Dr. Angel Hsu told the BBC that India ranked 174th out of 178 countries for air pollution, while China is at 178.
