China: Heat's on for fugitive officials

Beijing and Washington are approaching an agreement by which United States law enforcement agencies will assist China to catch fugitive corrupt officials.

Beijing and Washington are approaching an agreement by which United States law enforcement agencies will assist China to catch fugitive corrupt officials. The U.S. and China have no extradition treaty, one reason why the U.S., like Canada, is a favourite destination for corrupt Chinese Communist Party and government officials and their ill-gotten gains. There are thought to be about 150 corrupt Chinese officials hiding out in the U.S. Chinese officials say they are hopeful a meeting between law enforcement officials from both countries in mid-January will lead to improved co-operation.
