Mexico has abruptly cancelled a contract awarded to a Chinese-led consortium to build the country’s first bullet train. The reversal and decision to restart the bidding process came only four days after the contract was awarded to a group led by the China Railway Construction Group. The 210-kilometre line would join Mexico City with the northern industrial hub, Queretaro. The $3.7 billion project would have been the first high-speed railway in Latin America. The government said the contract was revoked to avoid “any doubts about the legitimacy and transparency” of the bidding process.
