India’s Supreme Court is considering ordering a national probe after hearing evidence of massive theft and sale of valuable artifacts of historic significance from museums all over the country. The court heard evidence from the office of the comptroller general and auditor general of India that purloined sculptures are turning up at major international auction houses. The case arose from a writ of habeas corpus filed by relatives of Sunil Kumar Upadhaya, a preservation officer at the Indian Museum in Kolkata, who has been missing since he claimed artifacts were being stolen from his museum.
