India has kept its position as the world’s largest beef exporter. New data says India has increased its lead over the No. 2 exporter, Brazil. In the last financial year, India exported 2.4 million tonnes of beef and veal, compared with two million tonnes by Brazil and 1.5 million tonnes by Australia. Most of India’s beef exports – 80% – go to Asian countries, and 15% to Africa. Exports of buffalo meat in particular have been growing by 14% for each of the past four years. The $4.8 billion that India earned from the export of buffalo meat last year was more than it earned from basmati rice.
