As it tries to tackle the problem of inflation in basic food commodities, the new Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is cracking down on traders who have started hoarding onions and potatoes.
The government has imposed limits on the stocks of these two items traders can keep, with fines or imprisonment facing offenders. The New Delhi government issued these regulations after receiving requests for action from six state administrations. The state governments said traders are hoarding potatoes and onions to try to create artificial scarcity and force up prices.
