India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi, is playing Japan and South Korea against each other in his quest for modern civil nuclear generation technology.
Modi has identified Japan as a priority country for Indian trade, and he has a strong personal relationship with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. But Modi postponed for two months his visit to Japan planned for July, in part because a nuclear technology deal had not yet been agreed. In the meantime Indian officials have been meeting with counterparts in South Korea, a major competitor with Japan for the export of civil nuclear technology.
