The Indonesian Employers Association can be accused of many things, but not of lacking in chutzpah. The association is urging the administration of President Joko Widodo to grant amnesty to all companies and conglomerates that have parked money overseas in order to avoid taxes. The idea is to encourage corporations to invest in Indonesia at a time when the prospect of higher interest rates in the United States is threatening to spur an outflow of funds. Association chairman Hariyadi Sukamdani said: “It may sound unfair that tax offenders get an amnesty. But the question is, do we want to move forward or keep looking backward?”
