More than 121 million of Indonesia's nearly 250 million people are expected to join the new National Social Insurance system being launched this year.
The new program brings together a plethora of existing schemes under the umbrella of the national Social Insurance Organizing Body. People living below the poverty line are entitled to have their $2 a month insurance fee covered by the government, but they will be eligible only for "class three" wards in hospitals.
Other scheme members can choose from three levels of coverage: $3 a month for third-class hospital wards, $4 a month for second-class and $6 a month for first-class wards.
