The pattern of foreign investment in Indonesia is changing markedly to cater to its young and increasingly wealthy population.
The country’s Investment Co-ordinating Board said last week it expects foreign investment to grow by 15% this year, which it says is a more sustainable level than the 27% growth last year. But about two-thirds of foreign investment now targets consumer-focused manufacturing and services sectors rather than resource industries.
Indonesia has nearly 250 million people, half of them under 30. By 2020, more than 140 million people are expected to be “affluent.”
