Indonesia: Reform green rules: governor

Environmental impact assessment rules are hindering development, says the governor of Jakarta, Indonesia, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.

Environmental impact assessment rules are hindering development, says the governor of Jakarta, Indonesia, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. The governor said he has asked President Joko Widodo to scrap the current environmental impact assessment (AMDAL) rules in favour of a simpler, less bureaucratic process. The current AMDAL process can take months to complete, he said. If a developer has already acquired AMDAL approval for a project, “why should we need another AMDDAL document for the construction of other buildings in the nearby area?” Basuki asked.
