The results of Indonesia’s parliamentary elections earlier this month produced much less support than expected for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), led by the mayor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo, who will be the party’s presidential candidate in July. PDI-P won only 19% of the parliamentary vote instead of the 30% expected. Many voters turned to the five Islamic parties, apparently in the belief that these are the only parties that can deliver clean government. PDI-P remains in a strong position to form the government and Widodo is still the favourite for the presidency, but they will now have to form coalitions
