Japan: Dim future for nuclear power

A report in the April 22–28 edition of this newspaper left the impression that a third of Japan’s nuclear reactors are operating again, after all 48 were shut down in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima earthquake and tsunami disaster.

In fact, all remain closed, but the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants to restart as many as possible, despite public antipathy toward nuclear power.

The expectation, however, is that only about one-third of the remaining 48 reactors will pass the more stringent safety regulations put in place since the Fukushima disaster.
