In the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster, Japan has been investing massively in other energy sources, especially those identified as “clean” sources of power. In the last three years Japan has stepped up its investment in the alternative energy sector faster than any other country. Last year Japan’s investment in the sector grew by 80% year-on-year to $28.6 billion, nearly all of it in solar energy. Even so, Japan’s investment in clean energy still places it third in dollar terms behind the United States and China, which spent $54.2 billion on clean energy sources in 2013.
