Negotiations between Japan and the United States in preparation for the planned Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement are proceeding at a snail’s pace.

A meeting last week between U.S. trade representative Michael Froman and Japan’s minister in charge of TPP negotiations, Akira Amari, failed to reach agreement on the most contentious sectors of agricultural products and automobiles.

Froman said he and Amari did agree “on the importance of reducing differences in our stances.”

There are 12 would-be TPP members, including Canada.
