Laos has plans to restore forest cover to 70% of the country by 2020. This means that trees will have to be planted on about 8.2 million hectares of land in the next three to four years. Back in the 1940s forests covered about 70% of Laos, but extensive logging, war and other environmental degradation have stripped much of the country of trees in the decades since. Now, forests cover only about 40% of the land. The government’s strategy for extensive reforestation of the country is to be supported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
