Malaysia is to revamp its gasoline subsidy program, which costs the exchequer the equivalent of $8 billion a year. Finance Minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah announced last week that in June next year the subsidies will be removed for all motorists earning more than the equivalent of $3,400 a month. Those earning between $1,700 and $3,400 will continue to get a partial subsidy and those earning less than $1,700 will still get the full subsidy. Ahmad said the high-income group would have to pay the equivalent of 88 cents a litre for gasoline while the low-income group will continue to pay only 79 cents.
