Malaysia’s Home Ministry, the department responsible for internal law and order, is considering a proposal by five companies to build a wall along the country’s borders with its neighbours. The idea is to try to curb rampant smuggling both of goods and illegal migrant labour. The proposal suggests building a wall along the northern border with Thailand of peninsular Malaysia, a distance of 646 kilometres. It also envisages a wall along Malaysia’s borders on the island of Borneo with Brunei – 481 kilometres – and Indonesia – 2,019 kilometres.
