The contest is heating up for a contract to build a high-speed rail link between Malaysia’s main city, Kuala Lumpur, and the city state of Singapore. At the moment, the 307-kilometre trip takes five hours by bus or up to eight hours by train. Singapore is conducting feasibility studies for construction of a high-speed train line with the hope of cutting the travel time to 90 minutes or less. The East Japan Railway Co., operator of the country’s Shinkansen bullet train, seems to be leading the pack with China a close second, and South Korea, France, Germany and Spain close behind.
