The formal end of military rule in Myanmar has encouraged massive investment in telecommunications. The equivalent of $3.5 billion has flowed into telecommunications investment over the last two years from Japan, Norway and Qatar, making it one of the largest targets of foreign investment in the country. Myanmar Mobile Symposium, held in the capital Naypyitaw in January, was told telecommunications development is likely to create about 250,000 job opportunities over the next 15 years and to contribute 5% to the country’s GDP as a result.
