New Zealand is set to benefit from keeping its head down and not getting involved in imposing sanctions on Russia for Moscow’s meddling in Ukraine. Moscow’s retaliation by imposing its own sanctions, especially a ban on imported foodstuffs, on the United States, Canada, Australia and the European Union don’t apply to New Zealand.
As a result, New Zealand expects to fill the holes in the Russian market, especially for cheese. New Zealand already exports over $100 million a year worth of dairy products to Russia, and the main problem will be finding enough certified New Zealand cheese producers to take up the slack.
