The Asian Development Bank has produced a pessimistic report on the likely economic effects in the Pacific region of rising sea levels.
“Our findings show that if not adequately addressed, climate change could overturn the region’s development achievements,” says the report.
The study envisages that by 2100 average temperatures will rise by 3 degrees centigrade and sea levels will rise by 1.45 metres. This, says the report, will lead to loss of agricultural land, reduced fish catches, falling tourism numbers and failed crops caused by changing climate patterns.
