Singapore: Apps taken for a ride

Singapore authorities are grudgingly going to permit ride-sharing apps like Uber, Hallo and Lyft to function in the Lion City, but with restrictions to “safeguard commuter safety and interests.” The most dramatic is that operators of the app services can dispatch only licensed taxis and drivers who disclose fare rates to customers in advance, have proper insurance and can provide backup services such as platforms for passenger complaints. Of course, the Singaporean requirements negate the whole idea of the apps, which is that the use of private cars and ride-sharing cuts fare costs.
