A survey of 344 South Koreans and 280 foreigners has found that most believe the country’s “digital culture” is its top competitive asset and characterizes the country. The poll by the Corea Image Communication Institute found that 60% of foreigners and 50% of South Koreans thought that widespread access to high-speed Internet had fostered this competitive quality. However, second on the list of South Korean attributes was K-pop and TV soap operas, cited by 13.7% of locals and 10% of foreigners. A similar survey in 2010 found that the division of the peninsula between North and South Korea dominated the country’s image.
