South Korea’s economy has made a solid recovery after the global recession of the last few years. Exports are up, as is domestic consumer spending. But the recovery has not yet reached South Korea’s young graduates and other new entries into the job market. Unemployment among those aged 15 to 29 is over 10%. Lack of career opportunities for young women and compulsory military service for men are contributing to the problem. But the major problem, say officials, is that the country is producing a surplus of overeducated young people with no workplace experience.
