Taiwan: Reactor put to vote

The Taiwanese government has decided to hold a referendum on whether or not to turn on the country’s controversial fourth nuclear power plant.

The Taiwanese government has decided to hold a referendum on whether or not to turn on the country’s controversial fourth nuclear power plant.

The decision, announced last week by Fan Chiang Tai-chi, head of the ruling Kuomintang party’s Culture and Communications Committee, followed massive demonstrations in the capital, Taipei, against the plant.

Construction is being halted pending the results of the referendum. Reactor No. 1 at the plant is complete and currently undergoing safety inspections. Reactor No. 2 is not complete.
