Taiwan's president, Ma Ying-jeou, has told a visiting group of seven Liberal Party MPs and senators he would like Canada's support for his country's bid to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade talks.
The TPP is an attractive trade club for Taiwan because it does not include China. Beijing, which claims to own Taiwan, regularly uses the threat of sanctions to block Taiwan's entry into international bodies, except as a junior partner to China
Ma's request came a few days after Taipei relaxed restrictions on imports of Canadian beef.
