Thailand: Debts weigh down airline

Thailand’s military regime says it is not going to allow the country’s money-losing flag carrier, Thai Airways International, to go bankrupt. Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha said last week the airline must get back into the black by cutting expenses, increasing revenue, dropping unprofitable routes and selling off unnecessary assets, including surplus aircraft. Thai Airways has total debts equal to $10 billion and it lost the equivalent of $458 million in 2013. It lost another $344 million in the first nine months of last year. The airline plans to sell 22 of its 102 planes and to cut about 10% of its routes.
