A cinema chain in Thailand has chosen to cancel showing the latest film in The Hunger Games franchise. The decision follows the adoption by protesters against May’s military coup of the three-finger salute used in the movie. The gesture is used in the films and books to signify admiration or gratitude, but Thai anti-coup protesters make the straight-arm salute as a mark of dissent against the military regime. The authorities have warned that anyone refusing to lower their arm when ordered faces arrest, and coup leader Prayuth Chan-ocha says anyone using the salute could “jeopardize their futures.”
